All Demon Slayer Breathing Styles Explained (And How to Invent Your Own)

23 May 2026 · 9 min read · by OCpit

Breathing styles are the heart of Demon Slayer's combat. They're not magic — they're breathing techniques that push the human body to superhuman limits, each one themed around an element with its own set of named "forms." Here's every major style, where it comes from, and how to design a believable one for your own OC.

the one fact that ties it all together
Every breathing style descends from Sun Breathing. The five elemental styles were created by swordsmen who couldn't learn Sun Breathing, so they adapted what they could into Water, Flame, Wind, Stone and Thunder. Everything else branches from those.

Sun Breathing: the origin of everything

First used by Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the most gifted swordsman who ever lived. Sun Breathing (disguised for generations as the Kamado family's "Hinokami Kagura" dance) is so demanding that almost no one can wield it. Tanjiro's journey is, in part, the rediscovery of this lost original style.

The five main styles

🌊Water Breathing

Fluid, adaptable, the most widely taught. Tanjiro's starting style and Giyu Tomioka's specialty.

🔥Flame Breathing

Aggressive and powerful, passed down the Rengoku family. All forward momentum.

Thunder Breathing

Built on explosive speed. Zenitsu only masters the First Form — but perfects it utterly.

🌪️Wind Breathing

Wild and ferocious, used by the Wind Hashira Sanemi. Slashing, gusting pressure.

🪨Stone Breathing

The sturdiest style, wielded by the strongest Hashira, Gyomei. Raw, grounded power.

The offshoots (where it gets fun)

  • Mist — derived from Wind. Disorienting, used by Muichiro.
  • Love — derived from Flame. Flexible and acrobatic, invented by Mitsuri Kanroji.
  • Insect — derived from Flower (itself from Water). Shinobu's poison-based style for a Hashira who can't behead demons by force.
  • Sound, Serpent, Beast, Flower — each a personal adaptation that reflects its creator's body and personality.
  • Moon — the dark mirror of Sun, used by the demon Kokushibo. The only style developed enough to truly rival the original.

How to invent a breathing style that doesn't feel fake

The fandom can smell a lazy OC style instantly. Here's the formula the real ones follow:

  • Pick a derivative, not a new element. The believable styles branch from the five mains. "Ash Breathing" (from Flame) reads better than "Galaxy Breathing."
  • Match it to a body and a flaw. Shinobu made Insect Breathing because she's too small to behead demons. Your style should solve a personal weakness.
  • Name your forms. Real styles have numbered, poetically named forms ("First Form: Water Surface Slash"). Give yours three or four.
  • Choose a Nichirin colour that fits. The blade colour signals the style. Pick deliberately.

Our Demon Slayer OC creator lets you set faction (Corps, Hashira, or demon), breathing style, haori pattern, Nichirin colour, hair, eyes, a demon-slayer mark, and a disposition — then exports a shareable card.

Demon Slayer breathing FAQ

Can a demon use a breathing style?

Demons use Blood Demon Arts rather than breathing — but Kokushibo, a former human swordsman turned demon, retained and combined Moon Breathing with his demonic powers, making him uniquely dangerous.

What colour is the strongest Nichirin blade?

The rare black Nichirin blade is tied to Sun Breathing. It's historically considered an ill omen because so few of its wielders survive long enough to master it — not because it's weak.

Frequently asked

What is the strongest breathing style in Demon Slayer?

Sun Breathing (Hinokami Kagura) is the original and strongest style. Every other breathing style is a derivative created by people who couldn't master it. Moon Breathing, its dark counterpart, is the only one developed to rival it.

How many breathing styles are there in Demon Slayer?

There are five 'main' elemental styles — Water, Flame, Wind, Stone and Thunder — plus many offshoots like Mist, Love, Insect, Sound, Serpent, Beast, Flower and Moon. All ultimately branch from Sun Breathing.

Why are Nichirin swords different colours?

A Nichirin blade changes colour based on its wielder. The colour often hints at the breathing style — red for Flame, blue for Water, yellow for Thunder — while a rare black blade is considered an ill omen tied to Sun Breathing.
