The Twelve Kizuki Explained: Demon Slayer's Upper & Lower Moons

Behind every demon in Demon Slayer is one source and one chain of command. Understanding the Twelve Kizukiโ the demon hierarchy beneath the Demon King โ is key to understanding the whole series. Here's how it works.
Muzan: the source of everything
Muzan Kibutsuji is the Demon King and the origin of every demon in existence โ including Nezuko. Demons are created from his blood, and he can kill any of his own demons remotely at will, which is exactly why they fear and obey him. Like all demons, his great weakness is sunlight, which is why the entire war happens in the dark.
The Twelve Kizuki
The Twelve Kizuki ("Twelve Demon Moons") are the twelve strongest demons serving Muzan directly. They're split into two groups of six:
- โนSix Upper Moons โ the elite. Ranked Upper One (strongest) to Upper Six.
- โนSix Lower Moons โ far weaker. Ranked Lower One to Lower Six.
The brutal gap between Upper and Lower
This is the detail that makes the hierarchy hit. The power difference between the two groups is enormous: even Lower Moon One is orders of magnitude weaker than Upper Moon Six. The Lower Moons are essentially cannon fodder โ they tend to flee from a Hashira and are frequently purged and replaced by an impatient Muzan. The Upper Moons are a different tier entirely.
The Upper Moons had gone unchanged for over a century, each having killed and devoured Hashira during their service. When one shows up, the story stops being a monster-of-the-week and becomes a survival fight.
The Upper Moons
Without heavy spoilers, the Upper Moons are the demons that define the back half of the series. Names fans will recognise include Kokushibo (Upper One), Doma (Upper Two), Akaza (Upper Three) and the sibling pair Gyutaro & Daki (Upper Six). Each is a wall the Demon Slayer Corps has to throw everything at โ and the reason the Hashira exist at all.
Designing a demon OC that fits the hierarchy
- โนPick a tier honestly. A Lower Moon OC is scrappy and disposable; an Upper Moon OC should feel like a boss. Decide which story you're telling.
- โนGive them a themed Blood Demon Art. The best demons have a single clear gimmick โ ice, sound, poison โ not generic strength.
- โนShow the rank. Use slit or glowing eyes and a tattered look to signal "demon" at a glance.
Our Demon Slayer OC creator includes Demon and Upper Moon factions, Blood Demon Art options, demon eyes and tattered robes.

Twelve Kizuki FAQ
Why does Muzan keep replacing the Lower Moons?
Muzan is ruthless and impatient. When the Lower Moons repeatedly fail against the Hashira, he sees them as weak and expendable โ leading to one of the most chilling scenes in the series.
Can a demon leave the Twelve Kizuki?
Not willingly. Demons serve Muzan under threat of instant death, and rank is earned by devouring humans to grow stronger. The only real exits are promotion, destruction by a slayer, or Muzan's own wrath.
