Behind every demon in Demon Slayer is one source and one chain of command. Understanding the Twelve Kizuki— the demon hierarchy beneath the Demon King — is key to understanding the whole series. Here's how it works.
Muzan: the King of Demons
Muzan Kibutsuji — the Demon King, often called the King of Demons — is the origin of every demon in existence, including Nezuko. Demons are created from his blood, and he can kill any of his own demons remotely at will, which is exactly why they fear and obey him. Like all demons, his great weakness is sunlight, which is why the entire war happens in the dark. Everyone below him in the 12 Kizuki answers to him directly.
The Twelve Kizuki
The Twelve Kizuki ("Twelve Demon Moons") are the twelve strongest demons serving Muzan directly. They're split into two groups of six:
- ▹Six Upper Moons — the elite. Ranked Upper One (strongest) to Upper Six.
- ▹Six Lower Moons — far weaker. Ranked Lower One to Lower Six.
The brutal gap between Upper and Lower
This is the detail that makes the hierarchy hit. The power difference between the two groups is enormous: even Lower Moon One is orders of magnitude weaker than Upper Moon Six. The Lower Moons are essentially cannon fodder — they tend to flee from a Hashira and are frequently purged and replaced by an impatient Muzan. The Upper Moons are a different tier entirely.
The Upper Moons had gone unchanged for over a century, each having killed and devoured Hashira during their service. When one shows up, the story stops being a monster-of-the-week and becomes a survival fight.
The Upper Moons (Upper Ranks 1–6)
The Upper Moons are the demons that define the back half of the series — each one a wall the Corps has to throw everything at, and the reason the Hashira exist at all. Here is the full Upper Moon roster:
- ▹Upper Moon One — Kokushibo: the strongest of the Twelve Kizuki, a six-eyed swordsman who wields Moon Breathing.
- ▹Upper Moon Two — Doma: a smiling, hollow cult leader with an ice-based Blood Demon Art.
- ▹Upper Moon Three — Akaza: a martial-artist demon who hunts strong opponents; the one who fought Rengoku.
- ▹Upper Moon Four — Hantengu (later Nakime): Hantengu splits into emotion-based clones; the biwa-playing Nakime takes the rank after him.
- ▹Upper Moon Five — Gyokko: a vase-dwelling demon obsessed with grotesque "art."
- ▹Upper Moon Six — Daki & Gyutaro (later Kaigaku): the sibling pair share the rank in the Entertainment District; Kaigaku inherits it later.

The Lower Moons (Lower Ranks 1–6)
The Lower Moons are the bottom tier of the 12 Kizuki — far weaker, and famously disposable. Muzan purges most of them early in a single chilling scene. The full Lower Moon roster:

Why does Muzan keep replacing the Lower Moons?
Muzan is ruthless and impatient. When the Lower Moons repeatedly fail against the Hashira, he sees them as weak and expendable — leading to one of the most chilling scenes in the series.
Can a demon leave the Twelve Kizuki?
Not willingly. Demons serve Muzan under threat of instant death, and rank is earned by devouring humans to grow stronger. The only real exits are promotion, destruction by a slayer, or Muzan's own wrath.
