Who Is Kanao Tsuyuri? Her Coin, Flower Breathing and Doma Explained
14 October 2026 · 6 min read · by OCpit
Kanao Tsuyuri is the quiet Flower Breathing slayer of Demon Slayer, the adopted sister of Shinobu Kocho, who used to flip a coin for every decision because she could not make them herself. Her arc runs from that coin to helping kill Doma, the demon who took both her sisters.
Who is Kanao?
- ▹Breathing style: Flower Breathing, with a light pink Nichirin sword. See our breathing styles guide.
- ▹Family: adopted sister of Shinobu and Kanae Kocho.
- ▹Gift: exceptional eyesight that lets her read an opponent's movements.
- ▹Voice: Reina Ueda (Japanese), Brianna Knickerbocker (English).
Her past and the coin
Kanao had a brutal, abusive childhood and was eventually sold off. Kanae and Shinobu Kocho came across her as she was being taken away, freed her and brought her to the Butterfly Mansion. By then she had shut down so completely that she would not do anything unless someone told her to. Kanae gave her a coin to flip whenever she had to decide something for herself.
Tanjiro's coin toss
Kanao passes the same Final Selection as Tanjiro, and later, at the Butterfly Mansion, he borrows her coin. He flips it to decide whether she should start listening to her own heart. It lands heads. When she asks how he did it, he says it was just chance, and that he would have kept flipping until it came up heads anyway.
Tanjiro does not fix Kanao. He just tells her the answer was always allowed to be yes.
Kanao and Doma
In the Infinity Castle, Kanao arrives after Shinobu has been absorbed by Doma. Shinobu's plan was to fill her own body with wisteria poison so that Doma would be poisoned by eating her. With Doma weakened, Kanao and Inosuke fight on together and cut off his head, avenging Kanae and Shinobu.
The final battle (major spoilers)
In the last fight against Muzan, Tanjiro is turned into a demon. Kanao reaches him and injects him with the same kind of drug that turned Nezuko back into a human, pushing her eyes past their limit to do it and damaging them. It helps bring Tanjiro back.
After the Demon Slayer Corps disbands, Kanao eventually marries Tanjiro.
Writing a Kanao-style OC
- ▹An object that makes choices. A coin, a die, a deck of cards. What does your OC hand their decisions to, and why?
- ▹Quiet is not empty. Kanao says very little and sees everything. Give your quiet OC one thing they notice that nobody else does.
- ▹One small kindness that changes everything. A coin toss turns Kanao's life around. Small beats can carry big arcs.
