Gyomei Himejima is the Stone Hashira, and the series treats him as the strongest of all nine Hashira. He is blind, gentle, constantly in tears and praying, and he fights with a spiked flail and an axe on a chain that nobody else could lift.
Who is Gyomei?
- ▹Rank: Stone Hashira, number one in our Hashira ranked list.
- ▹Weapon: a spiked flail and an axe joined by a chain, not a normal Nichirin sword.
- ▹Style: Stone Breathing, covered in our breathing styles guide.
- ▹Size: usually listed at 220 cm, by far the tallest Hashira.
- ▹Voice: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English).
He is blind and fights by sound, and he is almost always holding prayer beads. He weeps at things other people would shrug at, which makes it easy to forget he is the most dangerous human in the series.
The temple backstory
Before the Corps, Gyomei lived in a run-down temple looking after nine orphans. They were poor but happy. Every night he burned wisteria incense to keep demons away.
One night a child who had stayed out after dark met a demon and, to save themselves, led it back and put out the incense. The demon killed most of the children. Gyomei had no sword and had never fought, so he beat the demon with his bare hands until the sun came up.
The only survivor was the youngest, Sayo. When people arrived she was too young and too frightened to explain, and what she said made it sound as though Gyomei had killed them. He was sentenced to death, and only Kagaya Ubuyashiki stepping in saved him. That is why he joined the Corps, and why he is so slow to trust anyone, children included.
Gyomei's first fight was against a demon with no weapon and no training, and he won. Everything after that is just him getting a weapon.
Gyomei also saved the young Kocho sisters, which is part of how Shinobu and her sister Kanae came to join the Corps.
The boulder training
In the Hashira Training arc, Gyomei's training is the hardest stage. It ends with pushing a huge boulder a long distance, and Tanjiro only manages it after Genya Shinazugawa, whom Gyomei mentors, gives him advice. Afterwards Gyomei admits he had doubted Tanjiro because of Nezuko, and accepts him.
Gyomei vs Kokushibo
In the Infinity Castle he faces Kokushibo, Upper Moon One, alongside Sanemi, Muichiro and Genya. During the fight Gyomei awakens his Demon Slayer Mark. The Mark pushes a slayer to their limit, but anyone who awakens it is fated to die young, and Gyomei is already past the age where that bill comes due. He fights anyway.
How Gyomei dies (major spoilers)
Gyomei survives Kokushibo and then stands in the front line against Muzan, losing a leg in the final battle. He lives to see Muzan defeated, then dies of his injuries. As he goes, he sees the temple children again, the ones he could not save, and they come to take him with them.
Writing a Gyomei-style OC
- ▹Gentleness and power in one body. The strongest character is the one who cries most. What contradiction does your OC carry?
- ▹A wound that made them wary. Gyomei was betrayed by the people he protected. Who broke your OC's trust?
- ▹An unusual weapon. A flail and axe says more about him than a sword ever could.
- ▹A debt to one person. Kagaya saved his life. Who does your OC owe everything to?
