Akaza is Upper Moon Three (Upper Rank 3) of the Twelve Kizuki, the demon army serving Muzan Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer. He fights with his bare fists using a martial-arts Blood Demon Art called Destructive Death, he refuses to ever eat a woman, and he was once a human named Hakuji. Most fans know him as the demon who killed the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku at the end of the Mugen Train arc.
Who is Akaza?
Akaza is a martial-artist demon who fights entirely with his fists, no weapons. He is obsessed with strength, hunts out the strongest fighters he can find, and constantly tries to recruit them into becoming demons so they will never grow old or weak. He is the demon who fought Kyojuro Rengoku at the end of the Mugen Train arc, a fight that made him unforgettable to fans.
His human past: Hakuji
Before he was a demon, Akaza was a boy named Hakuji, born in the slums. He stole medicine to keep his sick father alive and was beaten and tattooed as a criminal for it. When his father took his own life, hoping to stop his son from turning to crime, Hakuji was left with nothing.
Then a dojo owner named Keizo took him in and taught him martial arts. Hakuji fell in love with Keizo's daughter, Koyuki, and for the first time had a family and a future. A rival dojo poisoned the water at their home. Keizo and Koyuki both died. Hakuji, wild with grief, killed all sixty-seven members of the rival dojo with his bare hands. Muzan found him in that moment and turned him into a demon.
Akaza's whole demon life, the obsession with strength, the refusal to protect no one again, is a broken echo of a man who once lost everyone he loved.
Why he refuses to eat women
The transformation into a demon wiped Hakuji's memories. He does not remember Koyuki, Keizo or his father. And yet, across a century as a killer, Akaza never harms or devours a woman. It is the one piece of his humanity that survived, a subconscious loyalty to the woman he loved and could not save.
His powers
Akaza's Blood Demon Art is called Destructive Death (Hakaisatsu), a set of brutal bare-handed martial-arts forms. Its signature is Compass Needle: he senses an opponent's fighting spirit like a radar for incoming attacks, which lets him read and counter moves before they land. Is Akaza stronger than Rengoku?
In their fight, Akaza's Upper Moon regeneration and speed give him a brutal edge over even a Hashira. Rengoku's stand against him is celebrated precisely because he pushes an Upper Moon so hard while completely outmatched on paper.
Does Akaza get a redemption?
In his final fight he recovers the memories Muzan erased: his father, his master Keizo, and Koyuki, the woman he loved. Realising who he was, he turns on Muzan's gift, stops his own regeneration and dies as Hakuji rather than as a demon. Many fans read it as a redemption, and it is one of the most emotional endings in the series.
