Akaza is one of the most loved and most tragic demons in Demon Slayer. As Upper Moon Three of the Twelve Kizuki, he is a terrifying opponent. As a person, his story is one of the saddest in the whole series. Here is who he really is.
Who is Akaza?
Akaza is a martial-artist demon who fights entirely with his fists, no weapons. He is obsessed with strength, hunts out the strongest fighters he can find, and constantly tries to recruit them into becoming demons so they will never grow old or weak. He is the demon who fought Kyojuro Rengoku at the end of the Mugen Train arc, a fight that made him unforgettable to fans.
His human past: Hakuji
Before he was a demon, Akaza was a boy named Hakuji, born in the slums. He stole medicine to keep his sick father alive and was beaten and tattooed as a criminal for it. When his father took his own life, hoping to stop his son from turning to crime, Hakuji was left with nothing.
Then a dojo owner named Keizo took him in and taught him martial arts. Hakuji fell in love with Keizo's daughter, Koyuki, and for the first time had a family and a future. A rival dojo poisoned the water at their home. Keizo and Koyuki both died. Hakuji, wild with grief, killed all sixty-seven members of the rival dojo with his bare hands. Muzan found him in that moment and turned him into a demon.
Akaza's whole demon life, the obsession with strength, the refusal to protect no one again, is a broken echo of a man who once lost everyone he loved.
Why he refuses to eat women
The transformation into a demon wiped Hakuji's memories. He does not remember Koyuki, Keizo or his father. And yet, across a century as a killer, Akaza never harms or devours a woman. It is the one piece of his humanity that survived, a subconscious loyalty to the woman he loved and could not save.
His powers
Akaza's Blood Demon Art is built around destructive martial arts and a technique that lets him read an opponent's fighting spirit, almost like a radar for incoming attacks.
