Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus Explained: The Rabbit Everyone Loves to Hate

Jax is the purple rabbit of The Amazing Digital Circus, voiced by Michael Kovach: selfish, sarcastic, gleefully unhelpful, and one of the most loved characters in the show. The finale reveals Jax is a closeted trans woman, which reframes the whole character.

Who is Jax?

Jax is one of the humans trapped inside the digital circus alongside Pomni, Ragatha, Kinger, Gangle and Zooble. He's a tall, periwinkle rabbit with a permanent smirk and a complete lack of interest in anyone else's feelings. Where the others cope with their imprisonment by clinging together, Jax copes by making everyone else's day worse for his own entertainment.

Why is he so popular?

A show this bleak, about trapped people slowly losing hope, needs a release valve, and Jax is it. He says the cruel, blunt thing the audience is half-thinking. He refuses to take the horror seriously. And his design is razor sharp. Love-to-hate is still love, and Jax is the patron saint of it.

Jax works because he's the one character who treats the nightmare like an inconvenience. In a story about despair, that's weirdly freeing to watch.

What happens to Jax (finale spoilers)

Jax's arc turns in episode 5, when she and Pomni bond while stargazing and swap stories about their lives before the circus. In episode 6 Jax renounces the friendship and the two end up fighting.

In the finale, Remember, the group learn they are brain-scanned copies who can never leave. Jax isolates herself and abstracts. Pomni goes inside her psyche and finds memories of Kaufmo, the friend who abstracted before Pomni arrived, and of Ribbit, a friend Jax pushed away after opening up to them, including hints about her closeted trans identity. He's more selfish than evil. Jax is trapped like everyone else; he just refuses to be nice about it. Whether there's more underneath is the kind of thing the series likes to leave hanging.

Does Jax abstract?

Yes, in the finale. For most of the series Jax looks immune, because not caring keeps the despair away. Remember shows that the detachment was hiding exactly the kind of pain that causes abstraction.
